Carbon dioxide is a well-known, natural and environmentally-friendly refrigerant, and was widely used in the early 20th century until lower-pressure CFC refrigerants replaced it. Environmental concerns have made carbon-dioxide-based refrigeration competitive once more. What's more, CO2's thermodynamic properties make it an ideal choice for in-ground heat rejection or absorption.

There are numerous advantages to this system:

  • CO2 is an environmentally friendly refrigerant. It does not cause ozone depletion. Fugitive emissions, although technically a greenhouse threat, are tiny compared to power plant stack emissions. CO2 is not generated in this process and therefore there is no net global warming.
  • CO2 is physilogically benign.
  • CO2 is inexpensive and readily available all over the world. There is no remediation fee for handling the original charge, as is the case with R-134a refrigerant.

Thar Energy has been working with CO2 based refrigeration for most of the last decade and has developed numerous patented and patent pending processes. Experience includes designing pumps, compressors, heat exchangers, microchannel heat exchangers and expansion devices for carbon dioxide.
